To demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness in teaching, teachers should incorporate student interests into lessons. As learned in ed. psych, students are more likely to be engaged in learning if they enjoy and can relate to what it is that they are learning about. Teachers can demonstrate responsiveness by quickly changing their teaching or explain something in a different way when they notice a student struggling to grasp a topic. Teachers also need to be able to seize teachable moments, when an unexpected event occurs in the classroom, teachers need to be prepared to use the unexpected occurrence in a way that benefits the lesson being taught.
In my classroom, I will demonstrate flexible and responsive teaching by using examples that the students understand. According to ed. psych theorist Greeno, students learn best when they feel as if they are at home in a classroom. When teaching math and science, I will have the ability to change the examples that I use to be things that the students understand and are accustomed to. Using examples that the students can relate to will help the students be more comfortable with what they are learning than they would be if I were to use examples that are completely foreign to them.
