Using questioning and discussion techniques should be used in classrooms to engage students in learning. To effectively engage students in discussion, the teacher should step out of the central role and allow students to partially take over and guide the conversation. The teachers main role in these conversations should be to keep the conversation going and making sure that the conversation keeps a focus on the learning objectives. Questions should be used that challenge the students to think deeply about topics and think about multiple ways to solve a problem.
I plan to integrate questioning and discussion techniques into my classrooms as a type of formative assessment. When all of the students in a classroom are engaged in a group discussion, I will be able to listen to the ideas of each of the students and find out their level of understanding for given topics. If a student has many correct points in their discussion, I will know that they have a good understanding of the mater; however, if a student struggles to present points in the discussion, it may be a sign that the student needs more help with the subject.
