Worksheets and quizzes can be a good way to check student comprehension of material, but it should not be the only method of assessment that teachers use. Assessing student progress can be done using subtle techniques such as circulating the classroom to determine which students are struggling. Teachers should also ask the students open-ended questions and listen to their responses to get feedback on what they understand. On projects, teachers can ask students to assess their own work by providing a carefully structured syllabus and asking students if their work meets the criteria stated on the syllabus. Teachers should take all of these methods of assessment as well as other methods and use the evidence to determine student understanding of the topics being learned.
In my classroom, I will use formative assessment throughout all of my lessons. I believe that it is important to use formative assessment throughout lessons because if students are struggling to understand a new topic, it would be most effective to address the issue as early as possible. Having formative assessment in my lessons would allow me to find issues early and address the topic from a different viewpoint before the students become completely lost. I will include assessment in my lessons using many of the different types of formative assessment that we learned about in foundations of education.
