Managing student behavior is a crucial component in ensuring a safe and effective learning environment. Teachers should have a short list of overarching rules for their classroom. Teachers must also always be with-it and notice everything that happens in their classroom, even when facing away from students.
In my classroom, each year on the first day of school, I will discuss with the students what they think the rules for the classroom. In doing this, they will feel as though they have a say in what the rules will be. When a classroom rule is broken, I will be able to remind the student that they contributed to what the classroom rules are, so they should not be breaking them. I also recognize that fairness is extremely important in classroom management, so whenever disciplinary measures are necessary, I will record what the student did and the disciplinary measure that I assigned, so I can reflect back and ensure fairness when other students break the same rule.
