To learn, students often need more than just instruction. Students often need several different resources or ways of learning the material to truly understand and learn what is being taught. It is crucial that teachers use materials that align with learning objectives and that are appropriately challenging to match the students abilities. Teachers should look beyond the materials provided by the school district as there are many great materials that could benefit the students and are free for teachers to use.
In my classroom, being middle level math and science, it is important for me to be knowledgeable about resources as a great portion of middle school math and science can and should be taught through example. If I teach a science class, I will demonstrate my knowledge of resources by having the students engage in science labs to get hands on experience working with the science that is being taught. In a math classroom, I will demonstrate my knowledge of resources by using math problems that gradually build upon each other and by using real-world math problems so students can see how the math can be relatable to their everyday lives.
