Students often come from diverse backgrounds and have had different experiences in their lives. These previous experiences often affect what they know and how they learn when before they enter a classroom. It is important for teachers to consider the different aspects of their students lives when developing lessons and assessments. Teachers should take the time to get to know their students, learn about the backgrounds that they come from, and figure out what styles of teaching would be most effective.
Middle school is an important time of development for students, so I need to put a strong emphasis on knowing my students. I plan to get to know my students right from the start of each school year by asking them to answer a few questions about themselves. This will allow me to find out what they are interested in so that I can design lessons that spark their interest and better engage them. I will also so everything that I can to encourage parents to come in for parent-teacher conferences so I can get a better idea of the background that each student comes from. Learning about students backgrounds will allow me to understand what is normal for students, what a students home life is like, and it may give me insight into reasons for a student's behavior.
